lessons from hockey and startups

In a world where career paths often resemble the predictable trajectories of a well-rehearsed play, it’s easy to become comfortable in corporate life. Here, annual raises, bonuses, and the proverbial carrot at the end of the stick offer just enough incentive to keep someone tethered to their role, irrespective of our sense of fulfillment. This narrative, however, begins to shift when we juxtapose the traditional work world with the fiercely competitive realm of professional sports, specifically hockey.

At first glance, comparing the corporate ladder to professional hockey might seem like juxtaposing apples to oranges. Yet, beneath the surface, both spheres are united by a universal thread: the quest for advancement. Whether in an office or on the ice, individuals are driven by a yearning to transcend the ordinary, to push beyond the bounds of complacency into realms of extraordinary achievement.

The Spark of Reflection

This contemplation is spurred by two pivotal experiences in my life: 1) the recent loss of my father, which prompted a deep reevaluation of my priorities, and 2) a critical juncture in my career at E V E T A S. As we stand on the precipice of significant organizational change, I find myself grappling with the challenge of negotiating my worth and credibility. This scenario is emblematic of a broader reality many face in their careers: the delicate dance of advocating for one’s value in an ever-evolving landscape.

A Parallel Universe: Professional Hockey and the Corporate World

The world of professional hockey mirrors the corporate sphere in more ways than one. Both are global stages where talent is scouted and nurtured based on need, with success often hinging on one’s ability to perform better than the competition. In the corporate arena, this might mean securing a unique role that sets you apart. In hockey, it’s the dream of making it to the NHL. Yet, underlying these ambitions is a shared sentiment: the pursuit of advancement.

The Art of Negotiation and Self-Advocacy

As I navigate my own career trajectory, I’m reminded of the importance of self-advocacy. The opportunity to negotiate our worth is fleeting, and it’s imperative that we seize these moments with both hands. This lesson is particularly salient for those of us who may have embarked on our professional journeys straight out of school, accepting entry-level compensation without the promise of guaranteed progression.

A Call to Action

This reflection is not just a personal narrative; it’s a clarion call to anyone standing at a crossroads in their career. Your leverage in negotiating significant increases in compensation diminishes with time, but the pursuit of your aspirations should not. If your current environment does not nurture your ambition, it may be is time to forge a new path.

As I reflect on my journey and the lessons learned along the way (analysis paralysis thinking about it), I’m compelled to share these insights. Not as a directive, but as an invitation to introspect, to challenge the status quo, and to advocate for your worth with the same fervor and resilience displayed by athletes on the ice. In the end, our careers, much like a game of hockey, are played on a sheet of possibilities where the only limits are those we place on ourselves.
