What’s the Point? Why I Started Writing

Background

At the end of the day, I find myself returning to two questions:

  1. How were the pyramids built?
  2. What is the point of life?

I’ve found convincing theories regarding the pyramids, so let’s focus on life. What’s the point of it? Well, I definitely don’t know, and now that I’m thinking about it – I don’t know much. I recognize that as I learn more, the less I know. That can be a tongue twister, to reiterate, the more an individual learns, the less they know – it’s an inverse relationship. (e.g., for every item you learn, you discover 10 more that you haven’t learned, hence an inflationary and compounding model.

What I do know is that the point(s) lies in the process itself. The ends don’t justify the means and the means don’t justify the ends. The people, the places, the experiences, the emotions – everything you experience in life influences you in some way/shape or form. There is no such thing as not having a bias.

Wikipedia defines memory as “faculty of the mind by which data or information is encoded, stored, and retrieved when needed.” This makes the mind seem like a computer… pretty cool. The thing is, I trust my computer far more than I trust my mind. I can rely on my computer. I can’t always rely on my mind. How cool would it be to watch your life – the people, the places, the experiences, the emotions. Everything. I bet in the future (timeline TBD) people will have the ability to access their memories much like access computer files.

Okay, so what are we doing here, on this page? Well, I’m tired of locking my thoughts, ideas, and scribbling in a paper prison. So I am going to wing it. I am going to start by identifying concrete (absolute) dates/events/places in my life (e.g., the things I know for certain – attending high school). I imagine that my camera roll can give some helpful hints alongside my playlists. I will follow my digital footprint as far as possible and periodically fill in the details as they come to me through internal and external sources. Hopefully, at some point friends will wander here and either contribute additional information or fact-check my recollection. Almost like a collaborative book.

Why? Simple, why not. My logic is that if I don’t believe that I have a ‘story’ worth telling, why the hell would anyone else? I don’t want to be a nobody forever, that sounds awful. I’m going to send it and burn all bridges behind me. I don’t have anything to lose – what’s the worst thing that could happen? My distant peers mock me and call me a ‘loser’. [insert scoffing noise] Anything that someone could come up with, I’ve already told myself, and I’m ~1000% more harsh on myself than any external source could be. Also, I know the person I am going to be is going to appreciate my work and effort.

I also believe that by examining past experiences, I will be able to reflect and identify key points/moments and uncover underlying drivers that have influenced who I am… and who I will become. For as long as I can remember I have been fixated on the future, it’s about time I look backwards/inwards. Who knows, maybe I’ll even mix in a few laughs here and there.

Approach

The page will grow through successive revisions and editing. Each time the document is updated, I will download and export a PDF. he first PDF (the one you are reading right now – ‘What’s the point? V01 – 9.06.2022’). The archive will be located at the end of the document. Maybe this will be the only version, I don’t know. Might as well see where it goes.
